Caring for Natural Hair
Any woman who has ever been to a hair salon for professional service can tell you that one of the BEST parts of the service is the time at the shampoo bowl. The feeling of laying back while someone else washes your hair is both exciting and relaxing at the same time. And while that part of the service is extremely stress-relieving it is also a very necessary part of the service.
Washing the hair performs numerous functions. For the person getting their hair washed, if done properly it removes product build-up from the hair and scalp which could cause styling as well as health problems. For the stylist, it allows them to assess the condition of the hair and scalp prior to styling. A very important, yet often overlooked part of haircare is scalp health. A healthy scalp is the foundation to healthy hair. A good stylist can identify potential problems of the scalp which helps their clients grow strong health hair and ultimately achieve their desired look.
The process of shampooing curly hair is not as simple as one might think. Due to the structure of curly hair it is more fragile than straight hair, therefore special care must be taken during the shampoo process to minimize additional stress and tangling of the hair. It is vital that the hair be completely saturated prior to adding shampoo. Otherwise the hair underneath won’t receive adequate product. Once the hair is completely saturated apply the shampoo in a gentle fashion beginning at the front hairline, dragging the shampoo down the strands to the ends. Separate the hair into sections making sure to cleans the scalp as well as the back of the head. This step is repeated until it is determined that the hair is adequately clean. From that point the conditioning process begins and how and what is used on the hair is dependent upon many factors and a knowledgeable stylist will guide their client down the path that is best for their hair based on it's current condition as well as what their hair desires are for the future.
